Manure Management Handbook. FARM STEWARDSHIP. Introduction. This handbook is intended to meet the needs of small scale livestock producers. It provides information that can benefit farm operations with any type of farm animal—horses, cows, goats, sheep, llamas, pigs, chickens, and rabbits.
There are 3 ingredients, namely dry animal waste, compost starters and rice bran (or corn flour). Usually, a ton of manure needs 1 kg of compost starters. But, do not scatter starters on the compost directly. You need to mix compost starters and rice bran at a ratio of 1 to 5 and dilute the mixture with water.
Temperature. When microbes work properly, the compost temperature will be between 120 and 160 F. Composting horse manure at proper temperatures can kill fly eggs and larvae, pathogens, parasites and weed seeds. Moisture. The best moisture content for horse manure composting system is about 60%.
