Plastic is OK if you care for it, but I wouldn't spend more than $50-100 on a plastic fermenter. At that price buy a corny keg or a stainless steel one. Each of my plastic fermenters costs less than £8 ($11) I wouldn't be spending much more than that for plastic personally. Been fermenting in plastic for 15 years.
